McLean started in the Scottish midfield after an impressive performance in Thursday’s 2-2 draw with Georgia, making his 33rd full international appearance.

The Tartan Army had already qualified for next summer’s Euro 2024 tournament in Germany, but Aron Donnum spoiled the party with a third-minute strike for the visitors.

Aston Villa captain John McGinn then brought Steve Clarke’s side level from the penalty spot, before Jorgen Strand Larsen regained the lead for Norway. The 31-year-old City stalwart played a key role as Scotland equalised once again, however, flicking on in trademark fashion before Leo Skiri Ostigard turned into his own net.

Southampton’s Stuart Armstrong then finished smartly to put the Scots in the lead for the first time, but his former team-mate Mohamed Elyounoussi scored late on to secure a point for the Scandinavian side.

McLean played for 70 minutes before being replaced by Bologna’s Lewis Ferguson.

The result means Scotland finish second in qualification Group A, advancing directly to the group stage of the tournament finals with Spain. Both Angus Gunn and Grant Hanley missed out with injury, but are expected to return to fitness in the coming weeks.
