Scotland Euros squad numbers revealed as Steve Clarke gives selection hint

THE countdown to Germany starts now.

Scotland boss Steve Clarke and his squad have jetted off to Deutschland, leaving Glasgow Airport in some style as Andy Robertson led his team-mates onto the plane to the tune of BAG PIPES on Sunday afternoon.

The team have the chance to go where no team in dark blue has gone before and make it to the knockout stages for the first time in the history of the senior men‘s game.

If they can make history, the names on the back of those Lion Rampant jerseys will go don in folklore.

And you can add the numbers to that, too.

That’s after the official squad numbers were revealed by tournament organisers Uefa.

Some will come as no surprise.

After he cemented his place as the nation’s go-to man between the sticks, Norwich City goalkeeper Angus Gunn takes the No1 shirt, as is customary of any first-choice shot-stopper.

Captain and starting left-back Robertson takes the traditional No3 shirt, while talisman John McGinn continues to wear No7 which he also dons for his club Aston Villa.

Elsewhere in the 26-man selection, Celtic skipper and regular in Clarke’s midfield Callum McGregor will once again play in No8.

It’s the shirt he had when scoring the country’s only goal at the last European Championships three years ago when netting against Croatia in a 3-1 defeat at the delayed Euro 2020.

For some of his other team-mates, the numbers they have been handed could provide an indication of the role they will play in matches against Germany, Switzerland and Hungary.

The biggest name – or number – which stands out is Anthony Ralston‘s, with the 25-year-old given the No2 jersey, the traditional shirt for the starting right-back.

It’a after the Hoops defender, who started the friendly with Finland on Friday night, looks to cement his place in the XI for the tournament, with the addition of Bristol City defender Ross McCrorie also confirmed as an option.

As the two recognised senior strikers, Lawrence Shankland and Che Adams will rep the No9 and 10 shirts respectively.

That makes sense after the unfortunate injury to regular No9 Lyndon Dykes which has ruled him out of the tournament.
