Scotland face new World Cup draw curveball as we could now get England and Wales

THERE’S been plenty of confusion over one of the most complicated draws in history already – and it’s already a fortnight away.

But the news this afternoon is that FIFA have TWEAKED their regulations for the draw.

On the previous update, it had been thought that Scotland would get priority for a FOUR-team group because we’ve got that Nations League relegation play-off with Greece in March.

But that line has been taken out of the rules which opens up the possibility – albeit slim – that we could end up in a group of five instead.

At one stage it seemed that England and Switzerland (the two Pot 1 teams who don’t have any play-offs or Nations League quarter finals in March) would definitely be in a group of five.

It was also thought that Wales – and big hitters in Pot 2 like Erling Haaland‘s Norway and Victor Gyokeres’ Sweden – were now off limits for Scotland too, but now the possibility exists albeit slim that we could get England from Pot 1 and Craig Bellamy‘s Wales from Pot 2.

ESPN reporter Dale Johnson wrote on X: “Previously Scotland and Republic of Ireland had to be in a group of four.

“This is no longer set in stone but the chances of being in a group of five are very low.

This is because after Pot 1 and Pot 2 there might not be an y five-team groups left which can contain a Uefa Nations League play-off team.”

He added: “The chances that there will be a five-team group available to Scotland or Republic of Ireland is low but it’s now possible for them to play England and Switzerland in one.

“And they can now draw the six teams in Pot 2 who do not have a Uefa Nations League play-off: Sweden, Wales, Poland, Romania, Czechia, Norway.”
