Young guns shine in first round of 2023 Players Championship

Collin Morikawa and Scottie Scheffler, both young major champions, have impressed in the first round of the 2023 Players Championship.
Morikawa shot a bogey-free 7-under 65 to sit just one stroke behind Chad Ramey’s lead, while Scheffler signed for a 4-under 68.
Although Ramey’s impressive start is unlikely to last, his performance has created a fascinating subplot at the event.
Morikawa’s strong putting and excellent tee-to-green play puts him in a great position heading into Friday.
Meanwhile, Scheffler’s smart shot-making and exceptional ball-striking talent have continued to demonstrate why he is underrated, despite being rated as the No. 2 player in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Other young stars, such as Viktor Hovland, Jordan Spieth, and Cameron Young, also had solid rounds.
However, Rory McIlroy struggled, finishing close to last in this field in strokes gained putting.
Several players commented on how penal the rough played, emphasising the need for accurate driving.
The greens baked out as the day progressed, making putting even more challenging.
Overall, the opening round has produced an exciting start to the tournament.
