NEW DELHI: In a thrilling encounter, Sri Lanka clinched the last spot at the upcoming women’s T20 World Cup after overcoming a spirited challenge from the United Arab Emirates on Sunday. Batting first, Sri Lanka posted a competitive total of 149-6, led by Vishmi Gunaratne’s impressive knock of 45 runs.
Despite a valiant effort from UAE’s captain Esha Oza, who scored a brilliant 66 runs off 44 balls, the hosts ultimately fell short, finishing at 134-7, handing Sri Lanka a hard-fought 15-run victory.
Led by Chamari Athapaththu, Sri Lanka will enter the World Cup in Bangladesh with high hopes, aiming to progress beyond the group stage for the first time following their historic T20 series win against England last year.
In another significant development, Scotland secured qualification for their maiden women’s World Cup by cruising to an emphatic eight-wicket victory over Ireland.
Captain Kathryn Bryce played a pivotal role, both with the ball, claiming figures of 4-8, and with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 35 runs, guiding Scotland to chase down Ireland’s target of 111 with ease.
Megan McColl’s fifty also contributed to Scotland’s impressive win, highlighting their strong performance throughout the qualifying event.
